Hazardous Areas

A Hazardous Area Classification identifies areas where explosive gas or dust atmospheres may occur and quantifies the risk in the form of hazardous area zones. This allows for the appropriate design, selection, procurement, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of equipment, in these areas where a potential risk of explosion exists. In particular, it allows the Operator to operate and maintain their facility safely and provides a mechanism to manage the risks associated with electrical equipment within a classified hazardous area.

The Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) places the responsibility of the hazardous area classification with the operator of the facility.

The design, construction, testing and inspection of Hazardous Area installations must be carried out by competent persons. Competency to perform Hazardous Area work is defined within AS/NZS 60079.14 clause 4.4 and in accordance with AS/NZS 4761.
